Democratic Culture and its Principles

Introduction
Democracy is the most liberal form of ruling. In this system, the stakeholders rule the nation in a responsible way. The government itself formed among people's representatives, and the ruling is done as per the wish and welfare of ordinary citizens, Peace, coexistence, and cooperation are prioritized. Fundamental rights and privileges of citizens are guaranteed through the provision of law. In fact, everything remains intact. Nothing is done against law, but everyone is bound by the rule of law. These sorts of practices in which everything is done in a democratic way based on law can be taken ad democratic culture. It is through these practices, there is the institutionalization of democracy in a truer sense.

Principles of Democratic Culture

Based on various values and norms, the principle of democratic culture can be highlighted through the following points:

  1. Good Governance: In a democratic culture, the government runs in a fair and transparent manner of being responsible to people. It is dedicated to promoting public welfare and the public hold a high right to assess the information about every matter of the state.
  2. Rule of law: There is law supremacy rather than the person in democratic culture. Law becomes a guiding principle in ruling where the stakeholder's rules as per set laws rather than the person will and interest.
  3. Protection of Fundamental Rights: People's fundamental rights are guaranteed through the constitution itself. If violated, there strong provision of legal punishment and compensation.
  4. Multiparty System, Periodic Election, and Adult Franchise: Everyone is free in forming or joining political parties as per his/her political ideology. There are periodic elections and all adult citizens are provided voting right to elect their representatives.
  5. Wide Public Participation: There is wide participation of people ranging from decision making to their execution. The people elect representatives to form the government taking part in elections. The elections provide a platform for the general public to increase their access to the state affairs of the nation.
  6. Respect to Minority: Though the majority is given due priority in democracy, there is respect to the voice of the minority, too. It is so because the majority cannot be right always. Additionally, there is a need for the minority to check and balance the majority in many public matters.
  7. Freedom of Expression and Press: Freedom of expression and press strengthens democratic culture. People become timely updated on social, economic, political, technological, and cultural activities going around. They learn to respect other's voices and can adjust themselves in odd situations.
  8. Sovereign of Power: The highest political authority i.e. sovereignty is vested upon people. People become all in all and hold whole control over the ruling.
  9. Decentralization of Power: In a democratic culture, much power is authorized to the local administrative bodies rather than confining them just to the central government.

In addition to them, inclusive ruling and social justice as well as prompt civil society also mark the features of democratic culture. Actually, democratic culture is not a matter just to be practiced in government mechanisms. Rather, it should be an integral part of each and every activity of our life and society. Every general public should discharge democratic culture in their deeds. For this, they should use their rights properly, and discharge their duties honestly. They must grow respect, love, and affectionate each other, and raise voice against injustice and untruth. Their acts must not be discriminatory, but humanitarian based on equal behavior. These all help generate social etiquette and promote justice.
